Chrono Therapeutics is a venture-capital start up based in Silicon Valley that is in the process of creating a wearable smoking cessation device and mobile app. My role on this project was to design the mobile app in such a way that created a gamified coaching experience for users who were trying to quit smoking.
The advantage of the dosing device compared to a traditional patch is that rather than starting out with a heavy does of nicotine that gradually tapers off during the day, users would be dosed with nicotine three times per day- once just before waking up, once after lunch, and again after dinner to help curb initial and post meal cravings for cigarettes. This way the user only had to program their bedtime and wake time into the app.
Within the experience, users would have digital reminders to change the device, access to clinically tested coaching articles and videos, plus detailed instructions on using and programming the device.
Users would also have the ability to log and give details on cravings (via a button on the device and a prompt in the app) plus rate the severity of an urge to smoke. This data would then be used to help personalize the coaching and tailor it to that user’s triggers.
The concept is, through a combination of clinically timed medication delivery, expert behavioral coaching, personalization, and tracking users will ultimately have the ability to learn what motivated them to smoke, and to break those cycles. The ultimate application of this product is to put the technology toward insulin dosing, and toward prescribing opioids (to allow controlled admission in order to prevent addiction).
